President's Report22nd August 2001My previous report was presented in February at the 18th ANZSMS Conference held at Legends Hotel, Surfers Paradise. Despite the relatively low attendance, the conference was extremely successful, both from an academic and a financial viewpoint. John Bartley and his Conference Committee are to be congratulated on such a fine effort. Special thanks to Gary Willett who provided an assortment of photographs taken at the Conference dinner. Following the views of members expressed at the February General Meeting, the 19th ANZSMS Conference in February 2003 will be held at Lorne preceding the annual Protein Conference. The selected venue is Erskine House. We hope to be able to announce details of the invited lecturers, including the Morrison Lecturer, within the next few months. Over the past financial year the central committee has provided $7200 in travel support and awards to graduate students attending and presenting papers/posters at the ANZSMS18 conference, as well as the overseas mass spectrometry conferences of ASMS49 (Chicago) and IMSC15 (Barcelona). We are committed to continue this level of support as it is an excellent use of the surplus funds of the Society and helps to both promote and strengthen the future of mass spectrometry in Australia and New Zealand. The financial assistance to visiting overseas lecturers will continue. So far this year the ANZSMS has been involved with special lectures across Australia by Nico Nibbering (Netherlands), Einar Uggerud (Norway) and Herbert Budzikiewicz (Germany). I would like to offer my personal congratulations to our present Vice-President and our former Public Officer on their recent academic achievements. Earlier this year Margaret Sheil was appointed as Dean of Science at the University of Wollongong, and Roger Summons (ANZSMS18 Morrison Lecturer) will soon be leaving our shores for the USA to take up a chair at the prestigious MIT.
Finally, I would like to acknowledge the efforts of Richard O'Hair who has served as ANZSMS Secretary since August 1997. Richard will however continue to serve on the ANZSMS Executive as the ANZSMS19 Conference Convenor.
