ANZSMS19 Convenor's Report

    26th August 2003

The 19th Meeting of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Mass Spectrometry was held from the 2nd - 6th of February 2003 at Erskine House in Lorne, Victoria, Australia. It was a successful meeting, both scientifically and financially. The final conference budget (see Treasurer's Report) showed a modest surplus after the seed loan of $5,000 was repaid.

Although full details of the conference are available from the website, the following details are briefly noted:

    1. The conference program included the following sessions: Fundamentals, Instrumental, Organic Geochemical, Analytical and Biological mass spectrometry.

    2. The delegates enjoyed the plenary and keynote lectures from the following speakers: (a) plenary lecturers: Professors Helmut Schwartz, Fred McLafferty and David Russell and Drs Gary Van Berkel, John Hayes, Paul D'Agostino, Richard Johnson. Professor Margaret Sheil (Morrison Lecture); (b) keynote lectures: Professors Peter Armentrout and Dr. Gavin Reid.

    3. Over 130 delegates attended.

    4. A total of 46 oral and 43 poster presentations were made.
In keeping with past conferences, student travel awards were made to help subsidise the cost of the conference. The student presentations were of a very high standard, with the best talk going to Tom Waters (University of Melbourne) and the best poster going to Ivan Kempson (University of South Australia).

The Conference Dinner was held on Thursday night and everyone enjoyed the brief after dinner talks given by Professors Morrison and McLafferty.

To commemorate the conference, a special issue of the European Journal of Mass Spectrometry will be devoted to presentation made at the conference. So far over 10 papers have been submitted.

Finally, I would like to thank the 8 committee members who met over 25 times and our 12 sponsors (named in the book of abstracts) who all helped to make this a successful conference.
