A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO ION DETECTION USING AN ELECTRON MULTIPLIER

Kevin Hunter

ETP Electron Multipliers, 31 Hope Street, Ermington, NSW 2115

Over the past ten years ETP has gained an extensive working knowledge of the problems encountered when installing and operating an electron multiplier ion detector in a mass spectrometer. This experience covers a wide range of commercial and developmental applications.

Drawing on this experience, some of the most frequently encountered electron multiplier problems are discussed in detail. A discussion on a number of important aspects of electron multiplier operation will be presented covering multiplier operating life and the, detection sensitivity, and linearity of response.

Recent data investigating the mechanisms of gain loss in an electron multiplier and its effect on multiplier operating life will be presented.
